Kalu James of Kalu & the Electric Joint. Contributed/Josh Timmermans

OUT THIS WEEK

Kalu & the Electric Joint, “Time Undone” (Spaceflight). Written amid a three-year residency at the Continental Gallery, these nine songs from singer-lyricist Kalu James and guitarist JT Holt are a refreshingly diverse lot. Nigeria native James’ rich, resonant voice puts a distinctive stamp on tunes that range from sultry groovers (“Testify”) to funk workouts (“Fighter”) to soulful ballads (“Sea of Life”). James, Holt, drummer John Speice and bassist Nick Jay formed the core band for these sessions with producer Brett Orrison at Dripping Springs’ Nest studio, but they brought in a few ringers as well, including War on Drugs horn player John Natchez and Widespread Panic bassist Dave Schools. Local contributors include Alex Marrero of Brownout, Bryan Richie of the Sword and singer Jai Malano. Release show Dec. 7 at Mohawk, in-store Dec. 11 at Waterloo Records. Here’s the video for the opening track, “Too Low to Get High”:
