Kevin Galloway, “The Change” (Nine Mile). Our Austin360 Artist of the Month for August, Galloway is releasing his first album under his own name after a decade of recording and touring as the frontman for roots-rock band Uncle Lucius. Mixing original material with choice 1970s cover songs including the Joe Cocker hit “You Are So Beautiful” and “Hands on the Wheel” from Willie Nelson’s “Red Headed Stranger” album, Galloway and producer Hal Jon Vorpahl create a sweet sound they’ve dubbed “Gulf Coast country soul” that puts the vocals front-and-center. “Blaze: Original Cast Recording,” the soundtrack to the acclaimed Blaze Foley biopic that premiered earlier this year at the Sundance and SXSW film festivals, will be released Sept. 21 on Cinewax/Light in the Attic.
The dozen tracks primarily feature musician/actor Ben Dickey, who plays Foley in the film, singing tunes Foley wrote. Other contributors include Charlie Sexton, who portrays Foley’s friend Townes Van Zandt in the film, performing Van Zandt’s “Marie”; and Hurray for the Riff Raff’s Alynda Segarra, Foley’s sister in the film, singing with Dickey on Blind Willie McTell’s “Pearly Gates.”
Segarra also sings “Drunken Angel,” a 1993 song Lucinda Williams wrote about Foley after his death, to close the album. And Dickey wrote one track, “Blaze & Sybil’s Lullaby,” performed as a duet with Alia Shawkat, who plays Sybil Rosen in the film. Supporting musicians on the soundtrack include Foley’s longtime friend and bandmate Gurf Morlix, who also is in the film.
