OUT THIS WEEK
Randy Rogers Band, “Nothing Shines Like Neon” (Tommy Jackson/Thirty Tigers). Arguably San Marcos’ biggest country music export since George Strait’s Cheatham Street heyday, the Randy Rogers Band drives home its ballads and boot-scooters with plenty of twanging guitars and sweet fiddle runs. “Nothing Shines Like Neon” finds them leaving Nashville major labels behind for a more homespun album that was recorded at Austin studio Cedar Creek with Buddy Cannon, who’s handled several of Willie Nelson’s recent records. They get prime vocal cameos from Alison Krauss (“Look Out Yonder”) and Jamey Johnson (“Actin’ Crazy”), but it’s the guest turn by Jerry Jeff Walker on rockin’ rave-up “Takin It As It Comes” that most squarely plants Rogers and his bandmates in their Texas roots. In-store Jan. 18 at Waterloo Records. Here’s the track “Neon Blues”:
Reed Turner, “Native Tongue” (EP). Eclectic, soulful indie singer-songwriter material from the native Austinite. Release show tonight, Jan. 15, at Stubb’s indoors. Here’s the track “Swim or Drown (Let the Lord Decide)”:
Emily Wolfe, “Atta Blues” (single). Wolfe played a release show and video taping for the song Thursday night to a packed house indoors at Stubb’s. here’s a short clip:
Matt the Electrician with Little Brave, “Mountains”/“20/20” (dual single). Second in a series of 7-inch releases Matt is doing in conjunction with a rotating cast of fellow Austin artists. Release show Feb. 5 at North Door.
