One of Austin’s best rockabilly bands since relocating here from Seattle many years ago, Ruby Dee & the Snakehandlers return with their first formal studio album in eight years. In between, they released a live album and a collection of children’s songs, but they shine brightly on this set of a dozen new original tunes and one cover. Band leader Ruby Dee Philippa, a brain-injury survivor from a scooter accident eight years ago, radiates confidence and grit above her band’s steady-rhythm support on highlights such as “I See Green,” “Who You Think I Am” and the title track. Release shows Friday, July 22, at Little Longhorn Saloon, and Saturday, July 23, at Continental Club. Here’s the leadoff cut, “All Knocked Up”:
Hector Ward & the Big Time, “Evolution: Live at the Saxon Pub.” This two-disc, 22-track set, drawn from various appearances at the storied South Austin venue over a five-year period, fully documents the group’s heavily rhythmic, horn-driven mix of Latin, blues, funk and rock styles. Release show Friday, July 22, at Saxon Pub. Here’s a number that’s appropriate for the political season, titled “Mr. President”:
Money Chicha, “Echo en Mexico” (Vampisoul). A full plate of diverse cultural influences, from South American dance music to Tex-Mex border accents, combine in this instrumental offshoot of Grupo Fantasma and Brownout. Playing Aug. 20 at Scoot Inn. Here’s the title track:
Krudas Cubensi, “Highly Addictive.” Cuban natives Odaymara Cuesta and Olivia Prendes combine hip-hop sounds and bilingual social activism on their Release show Saturday, July 23, at North Door. Here’s “No Somos Iguales”:
