Johnny Nicholas, “Fresh Air.” A classic country bluesman originally from the Northeast who’s lived in the Hill Country for decades, Nicholas is a fixture at the Saxon Pub with his long-running Wednesday residency. On “Fresh Air,” he digs deep into the sweltering sounds of the South on 11 original tunes plus two covers from blues legends Willie Dixon and Sleepy John Estes. Working with producer and bassist Bruce Hughes at Austin’s Arlyn Studios, Nicholas puts his rich tenor vocal stamp atop the soulful grooves of an ace local cast that includes guitarist Scrappy Jud Newcomb, drummer John Chipman and steel guitarist Cindy Cashdollar.
