Terri Hendrix, “Love You Strong.” The accomplished Central Texas songwriter has big plans for 2016, starting with this 11-song album produced by her longtime collaborator Lloyd Maines. On songs such as “Vulnerable” and the title track, Hendrix gets up close and personal, but elsewhere she takes a broader view. The Latin-tinged “Calle de los Ninos” tells the story of a young victim of Mexican violence, while the exquisite acoustic number “The Texas Star” celebrates Texas icons Ann Richards, Barbara Jordan, Liz Carpenter, Molly Ivins and Lady Bird Johnson — “women united in justice and freedom, blazing across the Lone Star sky,” as Hendrix puts it. The music mostly bends toward country-folk instrumentation, but Hendrix pushes boundaries with the heavily rhythmic, Celtic-influenced opening track “Feel the Time.” This record is the first of four that Hendrix plans to release this year, along with a book, in a series she’s calling Project 5. The subsequent albums will branch out into other styles, including gospel, blues and electronica. Playing Feb. 10 for Sun Radio’s “Texas Radio Live” show at Guero’s; release show Feb. 27 at Strange Brew.
P.T. Banks, “Moonlight Is Sunlight.” The 10-song debut of a new trio fronted by the former leader of Paul Banks & the Carousels is an eclectic affair highlighting Banks’ soaring vocals and melodic craftsmanship. Release show Feb. 6 at Stubb’s. Here’s the track “Hitchhiker”:
Brother Nothing, “All in My Mind.” Eleven songs of country-rock and Americana from the four-piece band led by singer-songwriter Josh Field. Release show Feb. 25 at One-2-One Bar. Here’s the song “Nowhere Town”:
