Carrie Rodriguez celebrates the release of “Lola” at Waterloo Records.
Carrie Rodriguez + the Sacred Hearts, “Lola” (Luz/Thirty Tigers). In our feature story on Rodriguez from this week’s American-Statesman, Nancy Flores writes: “Rodriguez finds herself in a rare position as a Chicana Americana fiddle player, something that early in her career she says didn’t occur to her as being unusual. After all, she says, the Americana music world embraced her, and her collaborations with master singer-songwriter Chip Taylor resulted in several acclaimed duet albums, which helped propel her solo career. Over the years, though, she remembers performing at shows and festivals that she wished were more diverse. “Lola,” her first bilingual album, transforms old ranchera tunes with modern arrangements and adds a country feel to songs in Spanish, English and Spanglish. The new record represents her better than any of her previous work, she says, not only because it’s Tex-Mex music for a new generation, but because she lets listeners into her world where cultural lines are always blurred.” In-store Feb. 19 at Waterloo Records. Sam Riggs, “Breathless” (Deep Creek/Thirty Tigers). The follow-up to 2013’s “Outrun the Sun” finds Riggs emerging as one of the leading voices among the contemporary crop of Texas country artists following in the footsteps of popular acts such as Pat Green and Jack Ingram. Riggs isn’t breaking new ground here, but tuneful, radio-ready tracks such as “The Heartbreak Girl” and “Secondhand Smoke” suggest he’s ready for a broader breakthrough beyond the local and regional realms. The latter number is revisited at the end of the record in a stripped-down acoustic version, followed by a hidden-track acoustic version of the album’s first single, “The Lucky Ones.” Here’s the full-band version of that song, which leads off the album:
Wildcat Apollo, “Melt Into the Ocean.” Follow-up to the self-titled 2013 album by the psychedelic band that relocated to Austin from Brooklyn. Release show Feb. 20 at Empire. Here’s the song “Kaleidoscopic”:
Nameless Frames, self-titled (Super Secret). Debut LP from a rock trio featuring members of the Zoltars, Love Collector, French Inhales and Smithers. In-store Feb. 20 at End of an Ear.
