Hayes Carll, “Lovers and Leavers” (Hwy 87/Thirty Tigers). Check out our Austin360 cover story on mystatesman.com and in Friday’s American-Statesman. In-store April 8 at Waterloo Records; also playing April 15 at Old Settler’s Music Festival. Here’s the track “The Magic Kid”:

MichaelFracassoAlbumCoverMichael Fracasso, “Here Come the Savages” (Blue Door). Like the surfeit of singer-songwriters who have kicked around Austin for a couple of decades with varying degrees of success, Fracasso often seems forgotten, taken for granted. And then you hear the title track to this album, his eighth, and wonder how that could ever be. Piano-and-vocal only, his voice soaring high and beautiful as his lyrics dive dark and painful, it’s a masterfully personal song. So is the whole record, which smartly supplements a majority of originals with gems from the likes of Brian Wilson, Ray Davies and Johnny Thunders that further tell the story of Fracasso’s own unique musical gift. Release show April 9 at Strange Brew.

Residual Kid, “Salsa” EP (Sire/Warner Bros.). This four-song, digital-only release from the Austin teen rockers presumably is a precursor to a major-label full-length debut. They’re often tagged as punk and that’s certainly part of their sound, but in many respects their hard-edged yet melodic songs feel more attuned to the ’90s heyday of post-Nirvana alternative rock.  Playing April 17 at Hole in the Wall.
