[We’re moving our weekly “On The Record” roundup of local releases from Friday to Thursday to help catch the odd release show scheduled early, such as two that are happening tonight.]
Don Leady & His Rockin’ Revue, “Poppy Toppy Gone.” You know what you’re gonna get when longtime Austin guitarist Don Leady is in the mix, dating back to his days in the LeRoi Brothers and the still-gigging Tail Gators: Chunky six-string rhythms and songs that celebrate the simple pleasures of blues-based rock ’n’ roll. Thirteen cuts here show that Leady still has his touch, given a youthful punch with 14-year-old guitar prodigy Jack Montesinos. Bassist Eric Przygocki and drummer Alberto Telo round out his new Rockin’ Revue. Release show April 16 at C-Boy’s Heart & Soul, in-store April 17 at Antone’s Record Shop. A snippet of their performance at Guero’s last night leads off this “One Night in April” video:
Calliope Musicals, “Time Owes You Nothing.” There’s an old-school hippy-dippy vibe inherent in much of this colorful indie-pop quintet’s second full-length album. They share a little bit of common ground with rising local indie band Wild Child, though their identity seems not quite that focused yet. (It’s worth noting they’re doing some tour dates with Shakey Graves this spring, just as Wild Child did in the past couple of years.) Some of the best moments here come near the end, specifically “Morning Ground,” the chorus of which gave the album its title. The band’s record-release show April 15 at Central Presbyterian Church promises a choir, a string section, dancers and even a show-ending parade down the street to Cheer Up Charlie’s where the celebration will continue. Here’s the track “Sink or Swim”:
Honey and Salt, “Seams of Value.” The guitar-bass-drums trio’s first full-length is a twisting, turning maelstrom of jazz-inflected indie garage-rock. Release show April 14 at Beerland. Here’s the track “Helium”:
Skyline, “Good Days.” Debut album of bluesy classic-rock quartet featuring lead vocalist Pearl Turner. Playing April 22 at Lucky Lounge.
Taylor & the Wild Now, “Tides” EP. Six cuts of tuneful, rhythmic, sophisticated pop from a five-piece band fronted by singer Taylor Baker. Release show April 14 at Stubb’s indoor. Here’s a video for the lead track, “Far Away,” that they submitted to this year’s NPR Tiny Desk contest:
