“Dreamer: A Tribute to Kent Finlay” (Eight 30). It was a year ago this week that San Marcos music mentor Finlay died at 77. Known primarily for his Cheatham Street Warehouse venue, Finlay also wrote a lot of songs, and many of those who held him in high regard contributed to this 15-track labor of love that serves as a musical companion to a new biography by his daughter Jenni Finlay and writer Brian T. Atkinson. Austin mainstays Slaid Cleaves and William Clark Green performs songs they co-wrote with Finlay; the rest were fully Finlay’s own, from Terri Hendrix’s tender opener “I’ll Sing You a Story” to the unlisted final track “Saturday Night” from Brennen Leigh & Noel McKay (who also contribute “Yesterday’s Oatmeal”). Another duet track, “Between You and Me,” pairs Randy Rogers and Sunny Sweeney on a spare arrangement that highlights their singing and the story. Family ties are underscored on “I’ve Written Some Life,” rendered by another of Finlay’s daughters, HalleyAnna.
