OUT THIS WEEK
Penny & Sparrow, “Let a Lover Drown You” (Single Lock/Thirty Tigers). On their third full-length album, Andy Baxter and Kyle Jahnke kick their indie-folk emotionalism up a notch. Though they’ve largely made their name so far as an Austin act, for “Let a Lover Drown You” they relocated to Alabama and worked with John Paul White of the Civil Wars and co-producer Ben Tanner for their Single Lock label, distributed by influential Nashville company Thirty Tigers. Their sound remains relatively minimalist, with Baxter and Jahnke’s high, plaintive vocals clearly front and center, but the embellishments are more richly textured here. The album is a deeply ingrained mood piece, never straying too far from its quiet but alluring core aesthetic. SXSW showcase March 17 at the Majestic; also playing April 16 at the Parish. Here’s the track “Bed Down,” which premiered on NPR:
Holy Wave, “Freaks of Nurture” (Reverb Appreciation Society). One of Austin’s best psychedelic bands keeps getting better on its fourth album, released on the label run by the folks responsible for Levitation Fest. The band is overseas this month and thus won’t be around for SXSW, but never fear, they’ll be back in time to play the first day of Levitation at Carson Creek Ranch on April 20. Here’s the album’s opening track, “She Put a Seed in My Ear.”
