Ray Prim, “To Whom It May Concern.” An excerpt from our Austin360 Artist of the Month story: “The first thing you notice about the new album from longtime Austin singer-songwriter and bandleader Ray Prim is just how wide-open his music is. Like much of the best music our city has produced over the decades, it’s nearly impossible to pin down as one genre or style. With multiple vocalists and two violinists carrying the melodies and a solid rhythm section locking down the groove, Prim and his six-piece backing crew create songs that carry accents of soul, rock, R&B, pop, folk, jazz and more. But ultimately this music stands apart from all those genres.” Release show Sept. 15 at North Door. Leti Garza, “El Unico Para Mi.” Working with composers Jose Galeano (Grupo Fantasma) and Scott McIntosh, as well as reviving three numbers from the repertoire of her aunt Eva Garza, the singer formerly known as Leticia Rodriguez offers up an impressively diverse 10-song collection of rhythmic music that draws from salsa, cumbia, merengue and other Latin forms. Following her 2012 debut “La Americana” and 2014’s “Eaguita Al Bate,” Garza further establishes her presence as one of Austin’s primary purveyors of Latin music, putting her own highly individual spin on a family tradition that has included landmark works from her late brother David Rodriguez and her renowned niece, violinist Carrie Rodriguez. ARCHIVAL RELEASES
LeRoi Brothers, “Check This Action” (Jungle). Fixtures on the local scene for more than 30 years, the LeRois first lit up the town in the early 1980s, with twin guitarists Don Leady and Steve Doerr leading a charge propelled by drummer Mike Buck. “Check This Action,” which featured bass contributions from the late, legendary Keith Ferguson, was an attention-getting debut on local label Amazing Records that helped earn the band a deal with MCA. This fine new Jungle Records reissue adds six bonus cuts (including the “Moon Twist” EP). Songs such as “Ain’t I’m a Dog,” “Pretty Little Lights of Town” and the title track remind just how much of a spark the LeRois ignited with local audiences in their heyday.
